Chinese Wang Yihan, who won the tournament back in 2010, takes her second Yonex Denmark Open-title after an incredibly exciting match against Korean Sung Ji Hyun.

24-year-old Wang Yihan Saturday defeated the world champions Intanon Ratchanok from Thailand in a long and tough match that lasted 1 hour and 17 minutes. But apparently she still had lots of energy left for another marathon match at Yonex Denmark Open.

This time she needed 1 hour and 23 minutes to defeat her opponent Sung Ji Hyun, 16-21/21-18/22-20, in an incredibly entertaining match.

Wang Yihan surprised by Korean run-up

The first game was very close. Wang Yihan seemed to be a little faster than her opponent and was all the time one or two points ahead. She managed to take the lead 15-9 before Sung Ji Hyun finally started to score more points.

And then suddenly everything went fast. Inspired by her compatriots, men’s double Lee Yong Dae and Yoo Yeon Seong who had just won their final at Yonex Denmark Open, Sung Ji Hyun won eight rallies in a row and turned the score to 17-15 in her favour. Wang Yihan, who started making a lot of easy mistakes, scored one more point, but that was it. The Korean took the game 21-16.

Extremely long rallies in second game
Wang Yihan started leading second game as well, but once again she couldn’t get rid of Sung Ji Hyun. The two girls played a lot of long rallies and won by turns and it looked like if the game was going to be settled in terms of energy. Sung Ji Hyun obviously wanted to win in two games, but at 18-18, Wang Yihan was the one taking the last three points and therefore the game. A third game was needed to find the winner.

Women’s badminton at its best
Once again the third and decisive game was full of long rallies and women’s world-class badminton. But compared to the other two games, this time it was Sung Ji Hyun who scored the points first and took the lead. But Wang Yihan kept on fighting and fighting to get back in the game and the Chinese power player succeeded.  At 18-18 she took the lead 20-18. She failed two match points, but finally at 22-20, she could raise her hands and get the Danish audience’s applause for a tremendous victory.

The young Chinese was obviously happy to take her second win at the tournament here in Denmark:

“It was a really tough match but even though I’m tired, I show a lot of strength. I feel very comfortable playing her in the Danish arena and I have won here before, and it helped me that I could hear the crowd cheering for me”.

“Everyone wishes to play games like these. We both played on a really high level, that’s why its even more satisfying winning”.

“I’m looking forward to come back to Denmark next year for the World Championship, apparently I play with a lot of success here”.
