World’s number one had to work hard for the title in Odense

Lee Chong Wei gave himself a nice present on his 30’th birthday. He won the final at Yonex Denmark Open 15-21, 21-12, 21-19 over Du Pengyu from China.

As was World’s number one and undefeated against Du Pengyu, Lee Chong Wei was the favorite to win the last match of the day. But he started out playing slow with long rallies and many clear shots. Du Pengyu had no problems keeping up. The seven seeded Chinese won the first set 21-15. At the break he led 11-10 and kept winning point to a lead 19-11.

Fast and aggressive
Lee Chong Wei got back in the game in the second set. He played faster and more aggressive and Du Pengyu could not keep up with the birthday child. From the beginning to the end of the set, Lee Chong Wei was in front and he easily won the set 21-12.

Another comeback
It looked like Lee Chong Wei went straight for the victory in the third set, but Du Pengyu did not want that to happen. He reached 11 points first. At that time Lee Chong Wei only had eight points. After the break it was time for another small comeback for Lee Chong Wei and he got in front 14-12.

The ending of the match got very close. The players followed each other on the score board from 16-16 to 19-19. On his first match point Lee Chong Wei made a smash on the line and won the set 21-19.

The Malaysian lost the final to Chen Long in 2011 in Odense. This year Chen Long was defeated by Du Pengyu in the semifinal 21-14, 21-10. Lee Chong Wei defeated Dane Jan Ø. Jørgensen in his semifinal 22-20, 21-15.
