Nearly eight decades ago, Denmark Open was played for the first time. Through time the tournament has seen many great perfomances and had many winners
Not many people remember Poul Nielsens victory in the men's singles category, Ruth Frederiksens victory in the women's singles category or their common victory in the mixed doubles category at Denmark Open.
That is because those victories date all the way back to 1935, where Denmark Open was held for the first time. Since then, many big players like Rudy Hartono, Liem Swi King, Li Yongbo and Lin Dan have had the honor of winning the tournament, which this year will be held for the 61st time.
Both Rudy Hartono and Lin Dan have had that honor three times in the men's singles, while the former men's doubles specialist, Li Yongbo, who currently is head of the Chinese national team, has won the tournament five times with Tian Bingyi.
The great Danes
Not surprisingly, a lot of Danish players have as well won the tournament throughout the past 77 years. Some of them have even won the tournament more than one time in their career.
Thus Peter Gade has won the tournament three times in the men's singles. The same goes for Svend Pri, while Poul-Erik Høyer Larsen has done so six times. Morten Frost, however, is the Dane who has won the tournament the most times.
No less than eight times has he claimed the title in the men's singles category at Denmark Open. Jan Ø. Jørgensen is the most recent Danish winner of the tournament.
Also in the women's singles category, a few Danes have don exceptionally well. Lene Køppen has experienced winning Denmark Open five times, Camilla Martin has done it six times, and then Tonny Olsen has won the tournament incredibly eight times (plus three in women's doubles).
Witness history
Through 77 years and 61 editions of the tournament, Denmark have claimed 142 gold medals. For the past four years, a Danish pair have won the mixed doubles category.
