Intense and dramatic victory sends Boe/Mogensen through to the quarter-finals

It was a tough one today for the tournament’s second-seeded men’s doubles pair Mathias Boe/Carsten Mogensen but a lot of fighting secured a Danish victory

The level of noise went up a few decibel as Mathias Boe/Carsten Mogensen stepped on court in a sold out Odense Idrætshal. The home crowd was cheering loudly for their men’s doubles-heroes as they took on Or Chin Chung/Tang Chun Man from Hong Kong China in the second round of the 2017 DANISA DENMARK OPEN presented by VICTOR.

- It’s amazing and extremely cool to be here in Odense on my home court and to see many friends and family supporting us. I’m really happy that we’re playing again tomorrow, says Mathias Boe.

The Danes looked extremely ready from the first point and quickly got a rather big lead and after nine minutes of play, Boe/Mogensen had an 11-8 lead. Then the Hong Kong Chinese fought their way back.

Or/Tang made quite a comeback and the first set started fluctuating. In spite of heavy Danish cheering, they got an 18-17 and 19-18 lead but the first game point was Danish at 20-19. Then Or/Tan won two consecutive points giving them a game point but a nice return and great follow up work at the net by Carsten Mogensen made it 21-21.

A service fault was then called on the Danes giving Or/Tang their third game point. That one turned out to be the lucky one for the Hong Kong Chinese as they took the first game 23-21.

- The reason it got difficult today is a combination of them playing really well and us not playing so well. We had some difficulties controlling our game and the shuttles and when we played a really nice shot it was often just out, says Boe.

The second game was a completely different story. Boe/Mogensen dominated the play all the way through leaving the crowd cheering loudly as they forced the match into a deciding game by winning 21-8 in the second one.

In the third game Or/Tang got a really good start and as the two pairs changed sides at the interval the Danes were behind 7-11. After quite a comeback the score was completely equal as the end of the third game got closer. At 17-17 the Danes were back – and the crowd got even louder!

From that point, the game was back to fluctuating as the pairs took turns having the lead. At 20-18 Boe/Mogensen had their first match point, but Or/Tang managed survived it. They didn’t survive the second Danish match point though and the Danes celebrated a 21-19 win in the deciding game with their many home court fans who, by this time, were screaming their lounges out.

- Or and Tang are extremely fast and they moved well which made it hard for us today. It was willpower and a lot of hart that made it possible for us to make a comeback. We looked each other in the eyes and decided to try to catch up with them and take it all the way home, says Boe and continues.

- Sometimes you succeed in these comebacks and sometimes you don’t. Today we succeeded and of course we’re very happy about that, he finishes.

Today’s victory sends the Danes through to the quarter-finals at DANISA DENMARK OPEN presented by VICTOR tomorrow which will be an all-Danish clash they will face the winner of Mads Conrad-Petersen/Mads Kolding and /Kasper Antonsen/Niclas Nøhr.
