Shocking exits and favourite victories were on the menu today in Odense where a young talent is in the quarters and a hometown favourite is out.

In one of today’s first matches the Danish Olympic silver medallists were back in action as they took on the Swiss/Malaysian pair Fankhauser/Saniru.

The Danes powered through and won a convincingly 21-15, 21-3 victory which gave them a big round of applause.

In mixed doubles Joachim Fischer and Christinna Pedersen were involved in a true drama against Isara/Amitrapai. The match ended 18-21, 21-19, 21-17 in favor of the Danes.

In a deciding rally in the end of third set Christinna Pedersen broke her racket but managed to play on and win the point anyway which gave them a 19-17 lead. That seemed to finally break down the opponents as they didn’t win a single point after that incident.

The other Danish mixed double Sara Thygesen and Mathias Christiansen were up against Chris and Gabrielle Adcock from England. The Adcock won in straight sets 21-15, 21-17 after a good fight from the Danish underdogs.

In men’s singles it was both sweet and sour for the home court audience today.

First qualifier Anders Antonsen created a sensation when he defeated eighth seeded Rajiv Ouseph from England 15-21, 22-20, 21-14 after saving four English match points.

In the last match of the evening Viktor Axelsen suffered a shocking exit when Lee Hyun Il from Korea turned out to be too big a handful for the Dane. The match went into three sets but was never really close as the scores were 7-21,21-13, 21-14 in favour of the Korean.

The best match of the day was either young Antonsen or the clash of the legends which appeared in the men’s doubles.

Mathias Boe/Carsten Mogensen faced Fu Haifeng/Xu Chen from China in a match with great shots, lots of energy and great attitudes. The crow created an amazing atmosphere and the Danes seemed to enjoy it.

They made their way into the quarters with a 21-10, 21-19 win.

All in all, it has been a long and good day in Odense where the crowd quite surprisingly had to say goodbye to their local hero Viktor Axels
