The clash of the legends!

Three Olympic silver- and one gold medallist faced each other tonight in Odense as Mathias Boe/Carsten Mogensen defeated Fu Haifeng and Xu Chen 21-10, 21-19.

It felt like the temperature went up several degrees when Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen entered the court in Odense tonight. Cheering and applause created a true home court atmosphere for the Danes which they really appreciated.

- The atmosphere was awesome and we enjoy every game we play here. It’s nice that we have the support from the crowd for a change. Normally, at all the other tournaments during the year, we have them against us. We always hope to get as many matches as possible here, says Carsten Mogensen.

Once the shuttles were flying the crowd kept on backing up their favourites and that gave them the perfect start. The match had only just begun when Boe/Mogensen had a 5-1 lead.

After a few quick points for the Chinese pair it looked like they were on their way back into the set, but the Danes stepped up and by the time of the interval the scoreboard showed a 11-4 lead.

The first rally after the interval sent the Chinese pair down on their knees as they were down on the floor several times before Mogensen hammered the shuttle down in floor leaving the opponent with no chance of returning it.

For the rest of the set the Danes smashed hard and precisely and followed up with quick movements towards the net where the rallies were finished off with great certainty.

One of the keys to success seemed to be the Danes being really good at keeping a lot of the play on Xu Chen as he is the least experienced men’s doubles player of the two. Fu Haifeng, on the other hand, is one of the best in the discipline ever, which he showed when given the chance tonight.

In the second set Boe/Mogensen came out strongly and pressured their opponents from the start. They forced Xu Chen to make quite a lot of mistakes and took the initiative from the very beginning of the rallies.  The Chinese pair never really found their way out of it.

Several times the opponents kissed the floor, just like in the first set, in an attempt to restrain the two well-playing Danes, but without great success. They did get a little closer towards the end, but the Danes secured a 21-19 win.

All in all, the Danes were satisfied with their performance, but they were also quite modest.

- I think we play on a high level in general and stick to our tactics. Even though both of them have a great attack we put up a good defence. There is room for improvement but in total our performance today is approved.

Boe/Mogensen are now in the quarterfinals where they once again will feel the support from the home court crowd.
