Anders Antonsen is only 19 years old and he is playing his very first Yonex Denmark Open presented by Danisa. Earlier this week he played the qualification and made his way into the main tournament.

Today he faced his biggest challenge so far as he was up against Rajiv Ouseph from England who is seeded number eight.

It is fair to say that Ouseph on paper was the favourite in that match, but apparently Antonsen hadn’t read those papers!

With amazing support from the home crowd he played his heart out on court to a point where he almost couldn’t stand on his own two feet. Antonsen had no doubts what helped him through such a tough match.

- The home court atmosphere helped me an awful lot. It was insane. I can see some of my family members among the crowd and that motivates me even more. The crowd really helped me through this match and I just feel so extremely sorry that I wasn’t able to sign autographs for kids on my way out!

After losing the first set 15-21 and being down 16-20 in the second the young underdog from Denmark turned everything around with six consecutive points which gave him 22-20 win.

At this point the crowd could really sense the possible sensation ahead and they cheared their favourite to a big lead in the third set.

For a moment it looked like Ouseph would make a comeback as got a little closer just before the interval but Antonsen came out strongly and gave himself another big lead. On his second match point he succeeded in making the sensation a reality and collapsed on the floor in happiness.

This is how Antnsen won the final point against Youseph

At his first appearance here in Odense Antonsen is ready for the tomorrows quarterfinals, what an achievement by the young Dane! He knows himself that what he did today was extraordinary.

- This is definitely my big breakthrough on the great international stage. It means so incredibly much to me. It motivates me and makes me believe that I can actually do this, says Antonsen.

Unfortunately, the Danish women’s double Sara Thygesen and Maiken Fruegaard wasn’t as succesfull as Antonsen. They faced 2016 Singapore Open champions and bronze medallists from the world championships in 2015 Maheswari and Polii from Indonesia. The Danes lost 13-21, 10-21.
