Danish darling and reigning champion Tine Baun got off to a great start in today’s first round. The second seeded Dane went through to the second round easily after beating Porntip Buranaprasertsuk from Thailand 21-15 21-8.

Unlike Tine Baun, top seeded Wang Yihan had to play three sets earlier today in her first round and this might fall out to Tine Bauns advantage should the two meet in the final, the Dane reckons.

-Of course it is a good thing that she had to play three sets today. When you play a lot early in the tournament, you might get a bit tired later in the tournament. But she won the last two sets quite easily, so I think she just had a bit of jet lag, says Tine Baun.

And after todays match she looks positively at her chances further on in the tournament.

-I felt good on court today and the home crowd was there with me. So hopefully I can do as well tomorrow as I did today, Tine Baun says.

Chinese qualifier sent Hirose packing

But not all of the seeded players were able to get through to the second round. Surprisingly, Japanese Eriko Hirose lost to a qualifier in straight sets. Chinese Liu Xin proved that China have sent more great players to Denmark Open China than just Wang Yihan in the ladies’ singles category.

Another favourite had her hopes crushed as well, as Pi Hongyan from France lost to Bulgarias Petcha Nedelcheva. The French player was clearly dissapointed to leave Denmark Open this early but has a chance to redeem herself at French Open next week on home ground

-I wanted to do well today and was not trying to save my game for next week. But now I am looking forward to French Open and hopefully I will play better then, Pi Hongyan says.
