Kashyap Parupalli from India was ranked number six in the world a year ago, but priorities sent him out of the top 15 in Men's Singles. However, at Yonex Denmark Open he has shown some great badminton, qualifying for the quarterfinals.
He was down by match points, but Indian men's singles Kashyap Parupalli bounced back and won 21-17 17-21 22-20 against Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka from Indonesia.
- It was a tight game. He had some good smashes. I have played him a couple of times before, and my focus was to keep him going and running around the court, because I am very confident on my physics. It went wrong when I got too laid back and he got the attack. I won because I went forward and played attacking. I should have done that a lot more, says Kashyap Parupalli, adding:
- It was a very important win for my confidence. I am still not back at best level, but I am playing okay.
In spring last year he was number six on the world ranking. However, in this season he build up the form a little different, resulting in a drop on the world ranking to his current position as number 28.
- I have had a season where I was set to peak at Commonwealth Games, which I won and at the World Championship. So I have not played that well in the Super Series tournament and that is why I have dropped on the world ranking. But I am confident that I will get back in the top 15 and this quarterfinal is very important for me, says Kashyap Parupalli.
In the next round he will play either Danish Jan Ø. Jørgensen or super star Lin Dan from China. Though Kashyap Parupalli admits that it would be great to face Lin Dan, actually he preferred to be in the opposite half of the draw.
- I would love to play Lin Dan. I think that he is one of the best players ever, so I really look forward to meet him, if he wins his match. Of course I would have preferred to be in the top half with Lee Chong Wei not being in the tournament. The other Indian player Srikanth might go all the way to the final, so that would also have been great, says Kashyap Parupalli.
Last year at Yonex Denmark Open Kashyap Parupalli lost against Jan Ø. Jørgensen in the second round.
