Last week the National Championship was held in Denmark, and the conclusion of the week is, that the Danish players are more than ready for the World Championship at home this August.

In every category we saw some very exiting matches and a lot of young players took their chance to show what they can do on the big stage. Especially the women single impressed this year. In the final Mia Blichfeldt who is only 16 years old won, and she became the youngest player ever to win the Danish Championship. But throughout the whole tournament women singles as Line Kjærsfeldt, Sandra-Maria Jensen and Anna Thea Madsen did really good.

In the men’s single the final was between Hans-Kristian Vittinghus and Viktor Axelsen. As Jan Ø. Jørgensen wasn’t able to play the tournament, due to an injury, this was the two players expected to be in the final. Axelsen won in three games in a very close and well played match. This was the first senior gold for Axelsen, who of course was very happy after the victory. Rasmus Gemke a very young and talented player impressed everybody with making it to the semifinal. On his way he won against Emil Holst, who is currently the fourth best men single in Denmark.

Unfortunately there was some cancellation for the tournament, as some players were injured due to a tough program. This was also the case in the men’s double where Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen couldn’t make it. Instead the next best couple in Denmark Mads Conrad-Petersen and Mads Pieler Kolding played a very good tournament. They didn’t give away any games and won the final convincingly 21-11/21-15 against David Daugaard and Mathias Christensen.

Actually Mads Conrad-Petersen won two gold medals as he also won the mixed-double together with Julie Houmann. This was the first gold medal at a national Championship for Houmann, who usually doesn’t play together with Conrad-Petersen, but her partner Anders Kristiansen was injured. They won the final in straight games against Anders Skaarup Rasmussen and Lena Grebak.

The Women’s double was won by Line Kruse and Marie Røpke, who also was the favorites as Christinna Pedersen and Kamilla Rytter-Juhl couldn’t play. In the final they were up against Maria Helsbøl and Lena Grebak.
