Another day has come to an end here at Yonex Denmark Open presented by Danisa, and what a day it has been!

In the ladies’ singles Carolina Marin played her first match here in Odense against the Danish talent Julie Dawall Jakobsen. Marin was down by match point in the third set and the young Dane even returned a shot, which she afterwards was convinced would have been out. Marin won 21-13, 16-21, 24-22. That’s about as close to an exit you get!

Marin wasn’t the only player from the singles who came close to leaving Odense before the un really begins. Lee Chong Wei was down a set and 12-17 in the second against Wei Nan, before he turned the match around and secured a 16-21, 21-19, 21-11 win.

After the match the world number one had no doubt about what had turned it around for him

- I didn’t play very well in the first or the second set, so I said to myself: just try your best, and in my mind I just thought that if I lose it is okay, but until the umpire says: “game 21” I just keep on fighting.

The Malaysian star also gave us hint, that this might be his last Yonex Denmark Open presented by Danisa.

- I like coming to Denmark, maybe because I always celebrate my birthday here, haha, just kidding. I always come to Denmark because I really enjoy it here, and I wanted to play one last Denmark Open before I retire, sais Chong Wei.

The number two seed in the men’s singles, hometown star Viktor Axelsen, is also through to the second round after a close match against Jeon Heyok Jin. The crowd went crazy as Axelsen secured the victory with a 21-14, 22-24, 21-11 win.

Son Wan Ho who is seeded as number six is also ready for the second round as he defeated another crowd favourite Hans-Kristian Vittinghus from Denmark 21-16, 21-15.

In the men’s double Goh and Tan, who won the Olympic silver medals, were up against Olympic champion Zhang Nan and his new partner Liu Cheng. When you have three out of four players from this years Olympic final it can only be good and so it was. High speed, amazing shots and incredible rallies were what defined this match which ended 21-18, 18-21, 21-18 in favour of Goh and Tan.

In a late-night drama Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen from Denmark defeated Chen Hung Ling and Chi-Lin Wang 21-14, 19-21, 22-20. In second round they will be up against another 2016 Olympic champion Fu Haifeng and his partner Xu Chen.

All in all the day has been filled with drama, surprises and great comebacks, and we hope to see much more of that tomorrow.
