The Spanish Olympic and world champion Carolina was a matchpoint down in her first round match against the young Danish talent Julie Dawall Jakobsen, but managed to pull through in three sets.
In what could very well be the match of the day the top seed Carolina Marin was up against Danish Julie Dawall Jakobsen. The young Dane wasn’t left many chances before the match, but as the match went on, it was clear that there could be a surprise in the making.

Marin won the first set as expected 21-13, but in the second set the Dane fought hard and managed to win the set 21-16.
In the third and deciding set the two players were close all the way till the end. Marin had a 20-18 lead, but Dawall didn’t give up and fought her way back with three consecutive points in her favour, which gave her a match point – and what a point they played.
Dawall rolled at the net three times, but each time Marin lifted the shuttlecock away. After a long rally Marin won the point and in the end she took the set 24-22.

The young Dane played the match of her life, but came short at the very end, and therefor she was, of course, quite disappointed, but proud, afterwards.
- Right now I am really disappointed, but in a few minutes I will be really really proud that I was able to play such a great match against her. I wouldn’t say that I didn’t expect to play well, but I didn’t expect to come so close at beating her, says Dawall and continues.
- Actually, I think I took a shot that was out when I had a matchpoint, so that’s really annoying that I didn’t let it fall, but It’s very easy to say now afterwards.

After all, Marin is through to the second round after an engaging and tough match, where she might not have played her best, but also faced an opponent that played very very well.
