When Copenhagen Masters back in 1993 was played for the first time, it was a culmination of several reasons. Today the tournament
is the only one of its kind
18 years ago the first shuttle at Copenhagen Masters was shot over the net. At that time, the tournament was being played in Cirkusbygningen in Copenhagen. Today the tournament is being played
in Falconer Salen. However, that is the only element that has changed over the years.
- The tournament started partly because the association’s international championships (currently Denmark Open, ed.) was moved away from the capital and out to the suburbs. And because we would like to regularly host a tournament in Copenhagen, this invitation
tournament between Christmas and New Year was a good possibility, says John Hansen, who has been tournament coordinator since 1993.
The concept is unique
Copenhagen Masters is known as a tournament rich in traditions, which is being played on the same premises each year. Some of the features of the tournament are, for example, that the tournament
is being played on only one court, that the audience is seated close to the court and that the tournament is not point awarding.
This invitation tournament is the only existing of its kind. Earlier, there used to exist more than a few around the world, including The Masters, an English invitation tournament. But as a consequence of the fact, that this kind of tournaments is more or less
extinct, Copenhagen Masters stands alone as something quite unique.
Yonex Copenhagen Masters will be played from Tuesday the 27th till Thursday the 29th of December.
