Finally, it happened. The moment many Danes have been waiting for. Viktor Axelsen proved his big talent and showed his skills at the international stage. At home ground he is already successful in the Badminton-league, but this Sunday he confirmed that he is already one of the best European badminton players.
Vitktor Axelsen won his first international tournament as a senior, when he beat Simon Maunoury in the final of Cyprus International. The place was not filled with star light, but just a big open hall with one road of plastic chairs – but Axelsen did not care, and celebrated a huge victory for him. It was clear that the Frenchmen soon gave up his hope for success, and the young Dane was confident and yelled out his happiness after his 21-10 and 21-11-win:
- Of course, it is really great to win the first international title. I knew the chance was there in this tournament, but I’m really satisfied with the way I did it, Viktor Axelsen says.

Gave nothing away
And exactly the way was remarkable. The opponents had no other option but resigning after just two games against Viktor Axelsen – he won every five matches in two straight games!

In an average game, the opponent was only given 10 points, before Axelsen reached his 21th. And Axelsen did not had an easy way to the final, where he beat the second seeded. During the tournament the first and third seeded players were sent out by the only 16-year-old Dane. To Axelsen it has been a kind of new world, travelling from tournament to tournament. But he is learning day by day and right now enjoying it:
- It is of course a bit tough for me, but it is really good experience. I got these weeks with a lot of tournaments and afterwards I will practice a lot and prepare for next year, he says.
Viktor Axelsen is still hoping to join this year’s Denmark Open. He is currently number three on the waiting list.
