Even though two of Denmark’s stars, Kamilla Juhl and Christinna Pedersen, lost earlier today, some other Danish talents showed their skills in the first round of the ladies doubles. But especially Marie Røpke and Lena Frier proved they are here to fight for wins. They were the only Danish girl who won this Wednesday evening, but we can truly expect more wins from Røpke and Frier who played confident in the first match. They defeated Carola Bott and Karina Schnaase from Germany in two straight games, 21-18 and 21-10. Tomorrow the Danes will meet another German pair, Marinello and Overzier. And Lena Frier is positive that the Danes can win tomorrow’s match and reach the quarter finals on Friday. Brave fight by four talents Furthermore two Danish pairs impressed the audience. Maria Helsbøl and Anne Skelbæk were close making a major upset. Helsbøl and Skelbæk surprised the favorites Nedelcheva and Russkikh by winning the opening game 21-19. But after almost an hour of play the young Danes had to realize the fact: The Eastern Europeans were only nearly beaten. After 21-15 and 21-17 in the two last sets Nedelcheva and Russkikh proceed to Thursday’s second round where they meet another Danish pair, Line Kruse and Mie Schjøtt-Kristensen. In the end of the stadium two other young Danes impressed the audience. Line Kjærsfeldt and Sandra-Maria Jensen are bronze medalists from this year’s World Junior Championships and the audience was shown why. The youngsters play for an hour against Lotte Jonathans and Paulien Van Dooremalen seedet 7 in this tournament. Regrettably for the Danes they could not keep up with their older opponents who closed the match 21-14 in the final game.
